Carol Faenzi will be signing her book, The Stonecutter’s Aria at
Black Dog Books, 115 South Main Street in Zionsville, on
    First Friday, September 6th from 6:00 – 8:00pm.
Carol will speak at 7:00 about writing her book and then take questions.

The Stonecutter’s Aria is a universal story of remembrance, connection and belonging and is based on true stories of Faenzi’s Italian marble-carving, opera singing ancestors.  It is winner of the “Book of the Year’ award for historical fiction by both ForeWord Magazine and the Independent Publisher’s Group.

The book began as a result of Faenzi taking a sabbatical from a busy corporate career in New York when she bought a one-way ticket to live in Tuscany, in search of her ancestral roots.  Her time in Italy and writing stories of her immigrant ancestors inspired her to change her life.

Faenzi presents programs across the United States that encourage audiences to preserve their family legacies, stories and rituals using opera, photography and storytelling.  She is currently developing a screenplay adaptation of The Stonecutter’s Aria.  She is a regular column contributor to the Indianapolis Business Journal.

In addition to her creative pursuits, Faenzi has a private practice of cultivating management and leadership abilities for women and is a consultant for a variety of small business and non-profit organizations.  Faenzi splits her time between Indianapolis, New York City and her family farm in Tuscany.

Cheryl Soden Moreland is a born-and-bred Hoosier, actually growing up simultaneously in two Indiana cities - Kokomo and Indianapolis. "Kokomo Kid" is about more than just growing up in Indiana, it's about the human dynamic and how our past forms and sometimes even predicts our future, whether we like it or not. It is what we do with those feelings and memories rising from good and bad moments that defines our character. This simple and sincere book is a sentimental journey to a time of innocence, love, and lost loves, - a nostalgic, introspective, inspiring peek into the diary of the atypical childhood of a midwestern girl. Cheryl's many friendships in the book include those with Wendell Berry and Kurt Vonnegut. IMG_4084

Zionsville resident, Marianne Doyle will be signing copies of a book she published titled Bonnie Knoll The Tale of a Home that Grew, at Black Dog Books on Saturday, September 24th from 1:00 - 3:00pm.  Bonnie Knoll is the remarkable and authentic story of Marianne and Guinn Doyle's beautiful Civil War era home that sits upon a hill in the village.  The story comes from a manuscript by previous owner, Grace Monroe, who lived in the house from 1922 to 1963.  It recounts the Monroe's restoration, remodeling, interior design, farm-to-table cooking, gardening and urban homesteading while at Bonnie Knoll.  It resonates with warmth and wit.  Bonnie Knoll is a jewel about a Zionsville home that continues its history with the Doyles as its present owners.

Rosaleen Crowley will be reading from her new book, img_5528  Point of Connection. This book of poetry and paintings reflects her Irish culture and poetic heritage.  Rosaleen's Irish heritage inspires her love of water, trees and open spaces.  Her interest in poetry and drama influence her passion for painting.  She writes a poem for each of her paintings.  She paints in oil and acrylics.  "Painting is silent poetry and poetry is painting with a gift of speech." Simonides (556BC-468BC).

Rosaleen experiences life through a physical and spiritual connection to Irish and American culture via her dual homes in Cork Ireland and Carmel, Indiana.  The rich focus in both communities on education and the arts makes it easy.

She will speak on Ireland's rich culture and heritage, the two cultures coming together, and the legacy of tradition and values to the next generation.  Rosaleen will also share some stories.

Mike Murphy, senior VP at Hirons & Co. and an Indiana State Representative for 16 years, will be signing "The Kimberlin's Go To War," 1 - 3PM, Sat. January 14th at Black Dog Books.

It is an astonishing story of a Southern Indiana family who sent 33 family members to the Civil War and lost 30% of them.

"The degree and depth of detail of this one family's story answers so many questions even many historians never ask.  With the turning of each page, we realize Hoosiers have always been pioneers and patriotic and that's why it's part of our DNA still today.  As Indiana celebrates our state's bicentennial, "The Kimberlins Go To War" should be required reading to better understand how we got here."

Cynthia Leavesley is having an art show of her paintings 11:00-6:00pm, Saturday, January 27th at Black Dog Books (115 S. Main Street).  Cynthia will be here to meet and speak with you about her art.  She is inspired by the beauty of nature and began drawing and photographing when she was young and began exhibiting and winning awards at age 13.

Her focus for the past 10 years has been in pastel and oil painting, especially plein air painting where she absorbs the vibrancy and true essence of the subject.  She frequently travels to coastal areas so she can capture her favorite subject - the luminescent quality of light found there.

Cynthia's work has been influenced by her study and appreciation of many artists and their work, especially the French and American impressionists, Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth and John Singer Sargent.  She has studied with Rosalie Nadeau, Elizabeth Mowry, Robert Eberle, Larry Rudolph, Pam Newell, Stan Moeller and Mary-Jean Weber.  Her work can be seen at various locations and galleries throughout the U.S.

Cynthia is excited to be relocating to Maine, a place she has always found visually inspiring.  This art show will possibly be the best time to see Cynthia and her beautiful paintings before she leaves Indiana.

How does one explain this quality to children? "GRIT, NOT GRITS" shares one day in the lives of two friends. Sam, who has cerebral palsy, is a role model to Leo who is learning about grit. A baseball theme and humor are used to explain this important trait to children.

A portion of the sale of each book will be donated to the UNITED CEREBRAL PALSY Association of Greater Indiana by the author as well as by Black Dog Books. Refreshments will be served. Call (317)733-1747 to reserve your copy.

Japan 1957.  Seventeen year old Naoko Nakamura's prearranged marriage would secure her family's status.  But she is in love with an American sailor, whose child she is carrying.  When found out, she is disgraced and banished by her family.

American, present day.  Tori Kovac, caring for her dying father, finds a letter containing a shocking revelation.  Setting out to learn the truth behind the letter, Tori travels to a remote seaside village in Japan where she confronts the demons of the past to pave a way for redemption.

Join us for a book signing for a tree on Saturday, November 23rd with local author, Ruby Hovda.  Ruby will be signing copies of her children's book, Tom the Listening Tree.  Ruby's book tells the story about a majestic yellow maple tree that lived in the heart of Zionsville's historic village in Serenity's patio/garden.  The tree was ancient and one of only a few left in Indiana.  It witnessed many events throughout its lifetime.  Ruby's book, tells the story of what the tree witnessed and experienced throughout its lifetime.  A strong wind took Tom down a year ago and it landed on the Brick Street Inn next-door.  Luckily no one was harmed.  Many wonderful things have been made out of Tom's trunk and branches to memorialize Tom's life.  These items are on display right where Tom spent his life on Main Street in Zionsville.  You will need to read the book to find out what was made from Tom and what the items symbolize about Zionsville's history.  Ruby works at Serenity greeting the guests.  She is a retired teacher and enjoys living in Zionsville near her grandchildren.

This event is free and light refreshments will be served.  Call 317-733-1747 to reserve your copy.

"SARAH HAD A LITTLE PLAN" by Jen Tousey is the story how a single mother of five in the Civil War era campaigned for nearly 40 years to have our nation come together, set aside our differences, and collectively celebrate one day to give thanks.  With the help of Abraham Lincoln, that dream became a reality, and each November, we now have the national holiday, known as Thanksgiving.

A BIG THANK YOU TO MAT LAGEMAN for a fabulous performance last night of "The Raven". You really channeled Poe perfectly! Your surprise encore of Edward Gorey's "The Wuggly Ump was awesome as well!

And THANK YOU ALSO TO OUR AUDIENCE - it was so great to have you all here. And thank you to everyone who helped make the night such a success.

We are happy to announce that Mat will be performing
